Pedagogical Models
Just as there are many Instructional Design theories, there are multiple pedagogical models. In general, current pedagogical models tend to emphasize the role of the teacher as coach and facilitator, as opposed to the “traditional” model of teacher as imparter of knowledge.
Feel free to explore the resources below to learn about some of the current models.
Online Teaching vs. Face-to-Face Teaching: A comparison of face-to-face and online instruction (requires StarID and password to access)
Effective Pedagogy: The Royal Society of Chemistry provides professional development opportunities for chemistry faculty. Much of the material on this site can be adapted to other subjects as appropriate.
Models of Teaching and Learning: This PowerPoint presentation includes notes that explain the concepts addressed on the slides. The learning outcomes of this presentation include:
- Evaluate critically some of the key issues associated with variation theory and threshold concepts.
- Assess the practicality of, and ways that the above theories might inform practice.
- Reflect critically on personal conceptions of learning and teaching in relation to a selection of theoretical propositions covered in the session.
