Applying Styles: Module 1
Removing Typographic Marks
Before starting the video on Removing Extra Spaces, please test your understanding of proper semantic structure in documents.
Removing Extra Spaces
As you’ll recall from our Introduction to Styles training, unnecessary characters in documents interfere with accessibility by increasing file size, creating confusing layout for document parsers to interpret, and are rendered as longer pauses by screen readers. The video below demonstrates how to use Word’s “Find and Replace” feature to eliminate all unnecessary spaces, which show up as mid-line dots when typographical marks are showing. Before watching the video, you are encouraged to download Worksheet 1 to follow along. You can pause or rewind the video any time to make sure you have enough time to complete the tasks shown in the video. After the video, you can open the exercise guide and follow the instructions to practice one more time and finalize your document for submission.
This video is close-captioned. Use the “CC” link in the video. For optimal learning, use either the captions or the audio, but not both simultaneously.
After viewing the video, select a Word Document for practice. You can download Worksheet 1, or you can use your own document.
If you are using your own document, use the form below to upload a copy of the document before beginning Exercise 1.
Once you have uploaded your document or downloaded Worksheet 1, begin Exercise 1—Removing Extra Spaces.
Removing Typographic Marks
Now that you have practiced using “Find and Replace” with spaces, let’s use this feature for paragraph marks, as demonstrated in the video below. As before, feel free to pause or rewind the video so that you have time to complete the tasks shown in the video.

Preview of Module 2—Applying Markup
Now that you have a clean version of your document, free of any extra typographic marks, our next module will demonstrate how to use styles to create semantic structure.
